Owning An Electric Fireplace, Yes or No?

It’s the time of year when we all want to cozy up beside the fire. If you’re considering buying an electric fireplace, here are some pros and cons to help you make your decision.

Electric fireplaces are visually appealing and come in a variety of styles to suit the interior of your home. They can save space compared to traditional fireplaces, and their flexible installation options allow you to add warmth and ambiance in a way that fits your décor.

Electric fireplaces have a longer lifespan than other types of fireplaces because they don’t have real flames or burn combustible fuels, which means no degradation or corrosion of parts. Installation is easy and can be done yourself, with most units including a remote control to adjust flame levels and heat. Many models allow you to enjoy the flame effects without using the heating element during warmer seasons.

Electric fireplaces don’t require a chimney or special venting, so they don’t lose heat through these structures. You can easily control the heat output to ensure maximum comfort. Although they’re not typically designed to be the central heating source, they can efficiently heat a small room.

Safety is another advantage of electric fireplaces. The fake flames eliminate open flame fire hazards, making them safer for kids and pets as there are no exposed hot surfaces. They don’t emit harmful gases and have a smaller carbon footprint.

In terms of efficiency, electric fireplaces convert electricity directly to heat with a 99% efficiency rate, as there’s no heat loss through a chimney or vent. Maintenance is minimal, usually just changing a light bulb every few years, and no specialists are required for maintenance or installation. They are also less expensive to install and run compared to wood or gas fireplaces.

However, electric fireplaces have their drawbacks. They lack the realism of real flames, including the crackling, popping, and smell of burning wood, which some people may find essential for ambiance. They aren’t designed to be the main heat source for a home and provide similar heat to a small electric space heater. Additionally, they won’t work during power outages, which can be a significant downside if you live in an area prone to outages.

Electric fireplaces don’t increase the value of your home like a permanent fireplace with a chimney might. According to a national realtor association, fireplaces are a highly requested feature and can increase home value by 6-8%. However, because electric fireplaces aren’t permanent installations, they won’t have this effect. On the upside, you can take them with you if you move.

There are also some safety concerns. Electric fireplaces can draw maximum power, potentially overloading circuits if other appliances share the same outlet. It’s advisable to have a dedicated circuit for your electric fireplace. Additionally, avoid placing items above or below the heat discharge point to prevent hazards.

Overall, electric fireplaces are a good choice due to their low cost, high efficiency, and practicality. The main drawbacks relate to personal taste and heating needs, particularly whether you prefer the ambiance of a real fire. This information should help you make a more informed decision on what is best for you.
