A part of the St. Tammany Trace that runs under the I-12 bridge has been closed since 2020. The portion was closed due to construction on widening I-12 which all widening of the interstate is now complete. The St. Tammany Trace portion has now been reopened since the beginning of November. 
Although the competition of the project was done last year, the section remained close to walkers and cyclists due to some work overhead on the bridge. The new section that was completed includes 560 feet running from south of Little Creek bridge to Koop Drive Loop.
The total project was part of Phase 1 of the expansion which will cost $154 million after the total project is complete. Phase 1 included widening bridges that ran over US 190 and the Pontchatolawa Creek, adding lanes to Hwy 59 and US 190 along with a concrete median in both directions.
The second phase of the project has begun and this will add additional lanes to three miles of a stretch between LA 21 and US 190. The completion is set for late 2023 and early 2024. Once completed, the third phase will begin which will widen LA 21 to LA 1077.
