The summer of 2024 will see a new $75 million outpatient surgery center. St. Tammany Health System has already broken ground for the expansion. The center will be located just south of Covington.
The surgery center will have twelve surgical suites all in a 126,000 square foot new construction building that will also include support services for pre and post operative care. Now the north shore will have same-day surgery capabilities.
St. Tammany Health System COO, Sharon Toups, is glad for the new center as it will free up the main hospital which is located in Covington. The main hospital can focus on the more complex surgeries. The new center will focus on OB-GYN surgeries, orthopedic surgeries and some ENT surgeries.
This project comes after a couple of other large projects, a four story patient tower at the main hospital and a cancer center at Ochsner Medical Center. There is also a new neonatal intensive care unit and New Family Center which will be added on the third floor of the main hospital.
Slidell will also get a $50 million addition to Slidell Memorial Hospital which $23 million of the $50 million comes from a $23 million bond issue. The addition will be a three-story tower that will be called the Surgical Services and Patient Care Tower. This is the largest expansion that has been on the main campus. The project will include an additional intensive care unit and an inpatient unit with private rooms that can convert to negative pressure which will aid in treating patients with airborne viruses.
