For years, the Tchefuncte River Lighthouse in Madisonville has stood as a beacon on Lake Pontchartrain, guiding mariners and symbolizing the community’s connection to the water. But as erosion steadily ate away at the shoreline, many residents feared that this nearly two-century-old landmark might not withstand the next serious storm.
Local resident Tommy Costanza, who has long visited the lighthouse, described the scene in recent years as heartbreaking. High tides often brought water directly to the base of the structure, raising concerns that one strong surge could topple it. The sense of urgency grew as the lake crept closer with each passing season.
This summer, the first step in protecting the lighthouse was completed. A $1.6 million project installed a rock jetty and used dredged mud from the lake to create a new buffer around the site. Alexis Hocevar, president of the Maritime Museum Louisiana Board, said the addition provides much-needed breathing room for the historic structure. While it won’t be able to withstand a major storm surge on its own, the barrier marks an important first defense.
The lighthouse, first lit in 1837, has survived hurricanes, shifting tides, and several rounds of restoration. Its role as a navigation aid remains, but its preservation has become just as important to the community’s heritage. “There had been genuine concern that the structure could topple over in a serious storm event,” Hocevar noted. The new protections mean the landmark now has a fighting chance.
Future phases of the project are already funded and include the construction of a breakwater to reduce wave action as well as a pier to allow better access. But the biggest challenge still lies ahead: restoring the Maritime Museum itself, which Hocevar estimates will cost more than $2.5 million. Fundraising for that effort is underway.
For residents like Costanza, who recently mounted a live camera atop the lighthouse to stream views of Madisonville, the progress is cause for optimism. “It’s great, a long time coming,” he said. The hope is that with continued investment and community support, the lighthouse will stand firm for another century, continuing to watch over the waters of Lake Pontchartrain while reminding future generations of the resilience of both the structure and the town it anchors.
